Art Blakey was an American jazz drummer and bandleader. He was also known as Abdullah Ibn Buhaina after he converted to Islam for a short time in the late 1940s. Blakey made a name for himself in the 1940s in the big band of Fletcher Henderson and Billy Eckstine.

b. October 11, 1919 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
d. October 16, 1990, Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Center in New York.

Wayne Shorter was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. Shorter came to prominence in the late 1950s as a member, and eventually primary composer for, Art Blakey´s Jazz Messengers. He has recorded over 20 albums as a bandleader.

b. August 25, 1933 in Newark, New Jersey.

Lee Morgan (by name Edward Lee Morgan) was an American jazz trumpeter and composer. Morgan stayed with Blakey until 1961 and started to record as leader in the late ´50s. Morgan rejoined Blakey for a short period. After leaving Blakey for the final time, Morgan continued to work prolifically as both a leader and a sideman with the likes of Hank Mobley and Wayne Shorter.
Morgan died at the age of 33 when his Common-law wife Helen Morgan shot and killed him following a confrontation at Slugs´Saloon, in New York City.

d. February 19, 1972 in New York.

Jymie Merritt (by name James Raleigh Merritt) was an American jazz double-bassist, electric-bass pioneer, band leader and composer. Merritt was a member of Art Blakey’s jazz Messengers group from 1957 until 1962.

b. May 3, 1926 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
d April 10, 2020 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
