Bill Evans with his son Evan in a studio, New York, 1975.
Bill Evans (by name William John Evans) was an American jazz pianist and composer who worked primarily as the leader of his trio. After high school, in September 1946, Evans attended Southeastern Louisiana University on a flute scholarship. He studied classical piano interpretation with Louis P. Kohnop, John Venettozzi, and Ronald Stetzel. A key figure in Evans's development was Gretchen Magee, whose methods of teaching left a big imprint on his compositional style.
