Duke Ellington (by name Edward Kennedy “ Duke “ Ellington) was an American jazz composer, pianist and leader of a jazz orchestra from 1923 through the rest of his life. Ellington was known for his inventive use of the orchestra, or big band, as well as for his eloquence and charisma.

b. April 29, 1899 in Washington D.C.
d. May 24, 1974 in New York.

Mercer Ellington (by name Mercer Kennedy Ellington) was an American musician, composer and arranger. His father was Duke Ellington, whose band mercer led for 20 years after his father´s death. Ellington grew up primarily in Harlem from the age of eight. By the age of eighteen, Ellington had written his first piece to be recorded by his father.

b. March 11, 1919 in Washington.
d. February 8, 1996 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
