Louis Armstrong (by name Louis Daniel Armstrong) nicknamed Satchmo was an American jazz trumpeter and vocalist. He is among the most influential figures in jazz. His career spanned five decades and different eras in the history of jazz. With his instantly recognizable rich, gravelly voice, Armstrong was also an influential singer and skillful improviser, bending the lyrics and melody of a song. He was also skilled at scat singing. By the end of Armstrong's life, his influence had spread to popular music in general.

d. July 6, 1971 in New York City

Dave Brubeck (by name David Warren Brubeck) was an American jazz pianist and composer. Brubeck was the recipient of several music awards and honors throughout his lifetime. In 1996, Brubeck received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2008, Brubeck was inducted into the California Hall of Fame, and a year later, he was given an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music.

b. December 6, 1920 in Concord, California.
d. December 5, 2012 in Newark, Connecticut.
